Craft Time

Gracie's picture for Miss Jimel. See the word "Miss"?

Gracie working on a masterpiece.

Lately, I've been really trying to work with Gracie on skills like letter recognition, spelling, writing, and small motor development. I've really been wanting to do crafts with her, but haven't gotten to it until this past weekend.

I headed to Target to buy some craft materials. Their selection wasn't great (I'll need to visit Michael's) but I came home with mini-markers, scissors, construction paper, glue, and some stickers. Gracie saw me putting these items into our basket and got very excited. In fact, we had barely made it through our front door before she was saying, "It's time to craft!"

In addition to the items from Target, I dove into my old magazines and ripped out pages with pictures on them that I thought she'd like. We had pictures of everything from dogs to cookies. When Gracie saw the pictures she immediately honed in on the dog. She decided that the dog needed to go on a picture for her teacher, Miss Jimel.

Once she'd finished gluing on some blue paper and the dog, she added her finishing touches with a marker. I tried to push her one step further and had her write Miss Jimel's name on the picture. She was gung-ho at first. We got through "Miss" (as seen in the picture above) before she decided that she needed a break. This writing thing is difficult! Luckily, I was able to convince her to finish it before school on Monday morning. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take a picture of the final product.

My next project needs to be some kind of "I'm Thankful" activity. Any ideas?

  1. Make a paper turkey with different colored feathers from construction paper? And put on each feather something she may be thankful for, so perhaps teach her to write the word "family", "God", etc.? Or am I totally out of my mind? LOL

  2. You are not out of your mind! Great idea. That's your closeted elementary teacher persona peeking out...
